Power transformers fire risk mitigation with application of the rupture resistant tank design concept
Failure of power transformers with the possibility of explosion due to low impedance arcing is a concern for manufacturers and utility companies. While the probability of such a failure is relatively low it still represents a significant risk, as the cost of replacement, clean-up and loss revenues can be very high and possibly negatively impacting the company’s reputation. When numbers quantify the typical financial exposure of a firm, the most important task remains to ensure the health and safety of all workers. In response to growing interest from utilities for power transformers equipped with explosion mitigation technologies, ABB Power Transformers has developed a Rupture Resistant Tank. In 2017, a full-size transformer tank was tested by injecting air at more than 200 times atmospheric pressure to simulate failures with energy exceeding 20 megajoules. The design absorbed the energy as it was predicted by computer simulations proving that ABB’s solution can mitigate risk of tank rupture.
GCB - GMS600 for pumped storage power plant
The integrated solution HECPS-3/5S is unique in the market providing all functions required by pump storage power plants (PSPP) in one system and from a single manufacturer. HECPS-3/5S consists of three individual modules: generator circuit-breaker (GCB) module with starting frequency converter (SFC) and back-to-back (BtB) starting switches, 5-phase disconnector, phase reversal module and electrical braking switch. ABB’s next generation monitoring system GMS600 simplifies and enhances generator circuit-breaker (GCB) monitoring.
