RAISE2019 BACKGROUND


In the era of globalization, it has become the focus of educational reform in various countries to build a more international, modern and personalized teaching environment, to cultivate students' transferable skills, to enhance cross-cultural communication and collaborative competence, to help them better prepare for the unknown employment environment, and to create a future-oriented educational ecosystem. In this context, the market of international schools in Asia has seen a fast overall growth.

 

TopSchools serves as a platform for international schools around the world. Over the past three years, TopSchools has been committed to promoting conversation, collaboration, sharing and inspiration in the international education industry.


TopSchools plays a leading role in building a bridge among international schools in Asia, sharing the best practices of internationalizing local schools, maximizing regional education resources’ exchange of innovative practices, ideas, teacher training programs and project initiatives.


TopSchools is hosting the 2nd Redefine Asian International Schools Conference (RAISE) in Shenzhen, China, on October 24 to 26, 2019. With the forum theme as ‘Promoting Schools’ Cross-National Collaboration and Communication’, the conference aims to explore topics including school’s developmental strategies, building educational communities, the influence of education technology, and how to nurture creative life-long learners, to find what’s common among schools from different regions and countries.


The conference will have 100+ guest speakers from 20+ countries with more than 2000 participants from more than 300 bilingual and international schools to discuss together the future of the international education in Asia. The conference format includes forums, social dinner, art exhibition and education resources expo.

    Benno Schmidt Jr.
    Global Advisory Board Co-Chair, Whittle School & Studios
    Benno Schmidt is among the world’s leading innovators in primary, secondary, and tertiary education. He has served as president of Yale University, dean of Columbia University Law School, and C.E.O. and chairman of Edison Schools (now EdisonLearning), a pioneer in the nation’s charter-school movement. More recently, he co-founded Avenues: The World School, in Manhattan. Benno chaired the board of trustees of the City University of New York, the largest urban public university in the world. He also chairs the board of the nonprofit Council for Aid to Education, a group that helps colleges and universities with accountability and academic planning. Early in his career, Benno clerked for Chief Justice Earl Warren, of the United States Supreme Court, and thereafter worked for two years in the U.S. Department of Justice. Benno recently received national recognition as the recipient of the sixth annual Philip Merrill Award of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (A.C.T.A.) for outstanding contributions to liberal-arts education.

    Ms Joy Qiao is the founder and Chair of Governors of Wellington College China. She has been devoted to international education in China for many years and is committed to fostering exchanges and partnerships with Britain. Having grown up in Shanghai, Ms Joy Qiao attended the University of Oxford from which she holds a BA in Computer Science. She then worked in the IT industry for a decade in a variety of sales and marketing roles in the UK, Germany and China. Becoming a mother motivated her interest in education and inspired her advance into the international education sector. She has extensive experience in multi-lingual communication and cross-cultural co-operation and is a critical bridge for bringing together the multiple partners involved in setting up Wellington College in China. Ms Joy Qiao also holds an EMBA degree from the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and is fluent in Mandarin, English and Shanghainese. She is married with two children, both of whom are attending Wellington College International Shanghai.

    Barnaby Lenon taught at Eton for 12 years, was the deputy head of Highgate School, head of Trinity School Croydon and head of Harrow for 12 years. He then helped establish the London Academy of Excellence in East London, one of the most successful state sixth form Academies, where he is chairman of governors. He is also chairman of the Independent Schools Council and has been a governor of 16 state and independent schools. He is a director of the New Schools Network which helps groups wishing to establish new schools under the government’s free schools policy. He was a member of the board of Ofqual during the implementation of the Gove reforms to GCSEs and A-levels and is now on their Standards Advisory Committee. He has written six books including, recently, Much Promise about high-achieving state schools and Other People’s Children about the least academic 50% in England. He researches the characteristics of effective teachers in the UK and USA.

    Jason Tsui currently serves as the General Principal, Assistant Chair of BOD of Zhongshan Whampoa International Education (ZWIE) Group with 11 different schools affiliated in Guangzhou CHINA. Jason, as a current IB workshop leader and IB school visitation member, has quite an extensive learning, teaching and administrative experience at primary, secondary as well as tertiary level in China, New Zealand and Australia. It was not until 2002 did he first introduce the IB programmes, a curriculum of his favorite to Shenzhen, China in his capacity as the president of the largest private institution. Based on his broad experience working in schools, government as a teacher and administrator in China and overseas, including the Ministry of Education, Department of Labour New Zealand, Jason has involved, as the principal, with five international schools regarding the application, implementation and evaluation of the IB programmes. Rod has had an extensive educational career in three States of Australia, as a teacher and senior administrator, including Principal of two Schools and as a lecturer and tutor at the University of Melbourne and Melbourne College of Education. Rod is currently Chair of the Round Square International Network of Schools and has been extensively involved in Governance of the International Baccalaureate Organisation as past Chair of the Regional Council – Asia Pacific, and Member of the IB Heads’ World Council. In May 2011, Rod was appointed as a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators for exceptional achievements and leadership in international education organisations and adopting an international approach to schooling and in 2012, was made an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Council for Education Leaders. In 2015, Rod’s contribution was acknowledged in the Queen’s Birthday Order of Australia Honours (AM), recognising Australians who have made an outstanding contribution in their area of expertise, “for significant service to secondary education, to national and international learning development organisations, and to the community”. Whilst Principal of Ivanhoe Grammar School Rod was very focussed on internationalising the learning experience for students. Rod has presented on the transformational impact of this approach to learning throughout Asia, as well as in Australia and Europe.
