More and more enterprises realize that ESG has become crucial for their operations. That is especially true in China, where authorities are prioritizing climate change initiatives as part of their economic and social development.


In our November Chamber Meeting, we will officially launch the Chamber’s new strategy project, the ESG Alliance. The project targets German companies in China looking to showcase their ESG engagement and exchange knowledge. In addition, a panel of industry experts will share their experience in transforming ESG theory into daily practice.

    Pit Heltmann (Greetings)
    Consul General of Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai
    Since July 2021, Pit Heltmann is the Consul General of Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai. From 2018 to 2020 he served as the German Ambassador in Pyongyang, North Korea. Heltmann’s diplomatic career began in 1988 when he joined the German Federal Foreign Office. The focus of his work during the following three decades has been East Asia. Apart from serving twice at the German Embassy in Tokyo, he was Head of the Trade Promotion Bureau at the German Embassy in China. He also served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Mongolia from 1994 to 1998 and at the German Embassy in the Philippines from 2007 to 2010.Between 2014 and 2018, Heltmann was Director of the Foreign, Security and Developmental Policy Division at the German Federal Press Office, where he was in charge of formulating the speaking notes for the Government Spokesperson on the German government's foreign, defense, and development policies. Heltmann double-majored in Geography and Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn, Germany.

    Susan Zhu (Panel Discussion)
    Director of Sustainability and EHS, Bosch Asia Pacific
    Zhu Weiwei (Susan) is the Director of Bosch, responsible for Sustainability and EHS coordination in China, Korea, and ASEAN. During her sixteen years at Bosch, Susan has broadened her expertise and experience in international assignments in Germany, coordinating EHS strategy, targets, standards, and reporting within the Bosch group. Bosch has been the first major industrial enterprise to become CO2-neutral (scope 1 and scope 2) worldwide since 2020. Susan leads the project team and coordinates the carbon neutrality project in China. Prior to her current role, Susan served in a major global semiconductor company, taking an EHS management position in China and international job rotations in the United States, Malaysia, and the Philippines. She is the Vice Chair of the CSR working group of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, and a Steering Committee member of the Shanghai Multi-National EHS Association since 2000.

    Founder of Collective Responsibility, Founder and Executive Volunteer of HandsOn Shanghai and Committee Chair of AMCHAM Sustainability and CSR Committee
    Driven by the belief that change begins with a single step, Richard Brubaker has spent the last 20 years in Asia working to engage, inspire and equip those around him to take their first step. Acting as a catalyst to driving sustainability, bring about the changes in leadership and business models, and recalibrate old models so that new opportunities can be captured, Brubaker’s work is centered around building foundations of knowledge, understanding core issues, engaging stakeholders, and doing what it takes to move forward. To date, Brubaker has overseen the development and execution of more than 250 projects focused on solving the social, environmental and economic challenges that are faced in Asia. Rich is regularly invited to speak at leadership, social innovation and sustainability-focused conferences to speak on issues of social innovation & entrepreneurship, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and leadership. Richard holds a Masters in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, and serves as the Chairman of the Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.

    Dr. iur. Dr. phil. Adolf PETER, LL.M., MA, CSE is Associate Professor at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law focusing on international commercial arbitration, the enforcement of ESG standards in international supply chains and EU law. In addition, Dr. Peter is International Of Counsel at Meissner & Passin Attorneys (Vienna, Austria) and Wöss & Partners (Mexico City and Washington D.C.). A selection panel established by the European Commission found Dr. Peter suitable for appointment for the position of Arbitrator and Trade and Sustainable Development Expert (TSD Expert) in bilateral disputes under the EU’s trade agreements with third countries. He holds two PhD and two Master degrees in Law and Religious Science, an LL.M. degree in South East European Law and European Integration (Karl-Franzens University of Graz, Austria) and a Master degree in Applied (Business) Ethics. In February 2021, Springer Singapore published his book “CSR and Codes of Business Ethics in the USA, Austria (EU) and China and their Enforcement in International Supply Chain Arbitrations” (ISBN: 978-981- 33-6072-3). Dr. Peter is listed as arbitrator in 10 international arbitration institutions, including ICC, SIAC, SHIAC, CMAC, SHAC, VIAC, THAC, etc. Furthermore, Dr. Peter is Certified Supervisory Expert recognized by the Austrian Economic Chambers (WKO).
