BACKGROUND

The International Symposium on Permafrost Engineering (ISPE) is originated from the China-Russia bilateral academic conferences. Russia held the 1st conference in Chita in 1993. Successively they were held from the second to the eleventh, in Harbin China (1996), Chita Russia (1998), Lanzhou China (2000), Yakutsk Russia (2002), Lanzhou China (2004), Chita Russia (2007), Xi’an China (2009), Mirny Russia (2011), Harbin China (2014), and Magadan Russia (2017).

The 12th International Symposium on Permafrost Engineering (ISPE 2024) will be held in Lanzhou, China on October 11-13, 2024 to further research on interactions between frozen ground in cold regions and the environment, engineering, climate, and ecology, and to deepen the scientific and technical exchanges and cooperation in the fields of permafrost science and engineering between permafrost communities. The major theme of this symposium is Challenges in Construction and Maintenance of Cold Region Infrastructures and Mitigative Methods.

THEMES

The themes are also listed as follows:

1. Changing permafrost and its hydrological, ecological and hazard impacts

2. Remote sensing of permafrost landscapes and monitoring technologies

3. Permafrost mapping

4. Reconstructing Past permafrost

5. Hydrological-Thermal-Mass-Mechanical transfer processes in freezing, frozen and thawed soils

6. Frozen ground engineering and cold regions architecture

7. Periglacial environments and phenomena, and their impacts, assessment, adaptation, and mitigation

8. Ground freezing method

9. Subsea Permafrost Dynamics and gas hydrates
