Our distinguished speaker, Ms. Lena Wassermann, Researcher at the University of Wuerzburg, will provide insights into the effects of the Chinese social credit system on German companies in China.
Contrary to the perception of the system in the Western media, the majority of German companies welcome the social credit system. This is because they have little to fear due to their high level of compliance and the data that is publicly available through the social credit system is a useful tool that German companies actively use. Through this webinar, we aim to shed light on the reality of the Chinese social credit system and how it impacts German companies operating in China.

Before joining the Chair of China Business and Economics at the University of Wuerzburg as a researcher, Lena Wassermann studied Sinology and Economics at the University of Munich for her bachelor's degree. Furthermore, she holds a master's degree in Politics of East Asia from the Ruhr-University Bochum. During her studies, she spent two and a half years in China - studying at Nankai University in Tianjin as well as conducting an internship at the German Consulate General in Guangzhou. In addition, she gained China-related work experience at the Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies (MERICS) in Berlin. Her dissertation project is part of the research group "Learning from the frontrunner? A multidisciplinary analysis of the Chinese Social Credit System and its impact on Germany" and is funded by the bidt. Her doctoral thesis takes up the economic perspective within the project and focuses on the impact of the Chinese Social Credit System on German firms operating in China.
