CPIA was established in September 1988. It is a national level legal entity registered in the Ministry of Civil Administration. Its business direct leadership is the State Assets Supervision and Administration Committee of China. In May 12, 2012, CPIA begins its eighth session of executive councils elected by the membership meeting.

The membership is structured of the important middle&big scale pharmaceutical production enterprises of various economic types,regional pharmaceutical associations, pharmaceutical R&D institutes and universities and colleges. CPIA now has 285 members. The business revenue of the members cover 65% of the chemic-pharmaceutical industry of China,its profit cover 60%. Under CPIA there are 16 specialized working units, 2 subsidiary associations, 14 working (coordination) commission and exchange teams.
