Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) was founded in 1958, becoming a key contributor in both the national ‘211 Project’ and ‘985 Advantage Subject Innovation Platform’, while keeping to the original goal of pursuing advanced scientific research and the development of cutting edge technology.
With its determination to become a world-renowned university, BUCT continues to carve its own unique reputation as a university dedicated to cutting-edge innovativeness and the cultivation of students of all disciplines within an ever-changing global environment.
The College of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) of BUCT is one of the departments founded when our university was established in 1958. After more than half a century of construction and development, it has achieved in distinct discipline characteristic, tremendous school-running strength, and significant academic achievements. Also it has become one of the important bases of talent training, scientific research, and social service in materials science and engineering.
The college is composed of 8 departments, 1 center and 1 institute, and has set up 1 national key discipline in materials science, 1 cultivated national key discipline in polymer chemistry and physics, 1 Beijing key discipline in materials science and engineering. It has built 2 national key laboratories with the relevant colleges, 1 National technological research Center with Jilin petrochemical Co. It has also independently built 1 Beijing laboratory, 1 key laboratory of the ministry of education, 1 engineering research center of the ministry of education, 1 high school discipline innovation base, 2 key laboratories of Beijing, 2 municipal engineering technology research center of Beijing, and 1 industrial technology research center.
The college has paid lots of attention to the adjustment and improvement of the whole staff-structure, to establish a high level of teaching faculty & staff. There are 184 faculties & staffs, 126 persons holding senior academic title, including 1 Distinguished Expert of Thousand Talents program, 4 Chair Professors of Yangtze River Scholars Program, 1 Lecture Professor of Yangtze River Scholars Program, 7 Distinguished Young Scholars Supported by National Natural Science Funds, 1 Excellent Youth Scholars Supported by National Natural Science Funds. 2 “973” Project Chief Scientists, 22 winners of Education Ministry's New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan, 2 Innovation Teams of the Ministry of Education, 1 National Defense Science and Technology Innovation team.
The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering in Beijing University of Chemical Technology
Provisional approval to establish the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering in Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) was given by the Ministry of Science and Technology on 27 June 2006 and final approval was obtained on 4 January 2009, although its predecessor—the former Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Science and Technology of Controllable Chemical Reactions—was founded in August 2000.
The Academic Committee consists of 18 distinguished scientists, with the chairman being CAS Academician Prof. ZHOU Qifeng.Prof. HE Jing is the Director of the Laboratory.
The work of the Laboratory is focused on developing more effective ways of utilizing chemical resources, in order to contribute to the national strategy of building a more resource-efficient society.Chemical Resource Engineering utilizes the latest advances in chemistry and chemical engineering to solve problems in fundamental research and technological development. An interdisciplinary approach is required and the Laboratory brings together the expertise of BUCT academics in the chemical engineering, chemistry and materials science fields. Three major research themes have been established: Assembly Chemistry,Controlled Polymerization, and Chemical Process Intensification.
The Laboratory follows the principles of “openness, flexibility, collaboration and competition” and emphasizes scientific research, personnel training and academic exchanges. In line with the ethos of BUCT, the Laboratory focuses on both basic and applied research in order to most effectively contribute to the development of the national economy. Grants are obtained from a variety of bodies for fundamental research, basic applied research, and technology transfer, and the work of the Laboratory results in a substantial number of both publications in peer-reviewed journals and national and international patents, as well as the construction of industrial production facilities. It is the combination of fundamental research, applied research and commercial development that gives theLaboratory its distinctive character.
Fudan University(FDU)
Fudan University (FDU) is one of the first universities to establish Macromolecular Science Education and Research Center (established in 1958) in China, and is among the first institutes to award Master, Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral positions in Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics. The current department of macromolecular science was established in 1993. The department also constitutes the most important basis for the Research Institute of Macromolecular Science and the state key laboratory of molecular engineering of polymers.
The department of macromolecular science currently hosts 75 faculties and staffs, among which there are 48 faculties (30 professors, 15 associate professors, 3 lecturers), including 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The research topics in this department are among the fields of polymer condensed matter physics, self-assembly of macromolecules, biomacromolecule and tissue engineering, functional polymers materials, polymer synthesis and structure design, and energy materials and devices, etc.
The State Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers at Fudan University
The State Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers at Fudan University was established in Oct. 2011 by State Ministry of Science and Technology. The laboratory originated from “The Open Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers (Ministry of Education)” (founded in Feb. 1994) and then “The Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers of Ministry of Education” in Sept. 1999.
Beijing High-tech Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering
Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering (BAIC-SM) was built on our existing strengths of research and started operations in 2014 as “BUCT International Research Center for Soft Matter”. At that time, Daan Frenkel (Professor, University of Cambridge) served as the Center Director, Gan, Zhihua (Professor, Beijing University of Chemical Technology) severed as Associate Director, Pablo Gaston Debenedetti (Professor, Dean for Research at Princeton University) served as Chair of the Academic Committee , Tan, Tianwei (Professor, Beijing University of Chemical Technology) as Chair of the Administrative Committee and Wang, Wenchuan (Professor, Beijing University of Chemical Technology) as Associate Chair of the Academic Committee. In addition, we have 5 faculty members initially, including 3 Part-time principal investigators: Frantisek Svec (Staff Scientist and Facility Director of E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), Lee Cronin (Professor, University of Glasgow) and Hui-min Li (Professor, National Chemical Engineering Institute in Paris); One full-time principal investigator, Dr. Jure Dobnikar.
In September 2015, BAIC-SM officially launched with research grant from the Beijing Municipal Government and the grant support will continue for 5-10 consecutive years. The center now has expanded to include three research divisions: Soft Matter Science Division, Soft Matter in Life Sciences and Technology Division and Soft Matter in Functional Materials Science and Engineering Division.
