About this workshop
Every writing teacher has this question: How do I teach my students to write well?
The answer? Teach with mentor texts. To help students learn how to craft their writing in effective and beautiful ways, students need to see and study mentor texts in writing lessons.
In this two-day workshop, Carl Anderson will explain how you can use mentor texts – that is, high-quality examples of the kinds of narrative, informational, and persuasive texts students write -- to teach students the craft of writing.
You’ll learn about five practical steps you can take to integrate mentor texts into your teaching:
1. Find and select good mentor texts.
2. Analyze mentor texts to find multiple teaching points.
3. “Immerse” (or familiarize) students with mentor texts at the beginning of a unit of study.
4. Lead whole-class study of mentor texts
5. Teach with mentor texts in mini-lessons, small group lessons, and writing conferences.
As part of the workshop, you’ll study excellent narrative, informational, and persuasive mentor texts. You’ll also watch videos of Carl teaching with mentor texts that bring to life how to use these powerful teaching tools.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have learned numerous strategies you can use to teach with mentor texts that you can use right away in your classroom.
